Sertanejo
Sertanejo is a Brazilian musical genre produced in the 1910s by rural and urban composers, formerly called modas, toadas, cateretês, chulas, emboladas and batuques, whose viola sound is predominant. Folklorist Cornélio Pires knew caipira music, in its original state, on farms in the interior of the State of São Paulo and described it in his book "Conversas ao pé do Fogo": -"His music is characterized by its romantic lyrics, by a sad song that moves and reminds of the slave quarters and the tapera, but its dance is joyful". Cornélio Pires, in his book "Sambas e Cateretês", collected song lyrics sung on farms in the interior of the state of São Paulo in the early 20th century, before commercial and recorded country music existed. Without the book "Sambas e Cateretês" these compositions would have fallen into oblivion.
